Nūr is a free, ad-free Muslim companion app. We built it to respect your privacy. There are no ads, no third-party analytics or tracking, and no account to sign up for — and we don’t sell or rent your data to anyone. This policy explains what limited information the app handles and why.

At a glance

Who we are

This app is provided by Muhammad Mudassar, an independent developer. For any privacy question or request, contact us at hello@nurmuslimapp.com.

Information the app handles, and why

We keep data collection to the minimum needed to make each feature work.

Location

With your permission, the app uses your device location to calculate prayer times for where you are, point the Qibla compass toward the Kaaba, and find nearby mosques and halal places. Your location is stored on your device for these features. It is not sent to us.

When you use the mosque / halal finder, your approximate search coordinates are sent to the mapping and places providers below so they can return nearby results and map tiles. To turn coordinates into a readable city name, the app uses your device operating system’s built-in geocoder (Apple or Google). You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings; location-based features will then ask you to search for a place instead.

Place search

When you type a city or area to search, that text query is sent to the Open-Meteo geocoding service to return matching locations.

Qur’an, translations, tafsir and audio

Qur’an text, translations, tafsir, recitation audio, and the daily Verse of the Day are fetched from the Quran.com API when you open those features. Like any internet request, this includes your device’s IP address.

Zakat calculator

When you use the Zakat calculator, the app fetches current metal prices (from gold-api.com) and currency exchange rates (from open.er-api.com) to help you calculate your zakat. You enter your own figures; we don’t store them.

Notifications

With your permission, the app schedules local notifications on your device to remind you of prayer times and the adhan. These are generated and scheduled on your phone.

Data stored on your device

Your bookmarks, favourite duʿās, prayer tracker history, downloaded content, app settings and saved location are stored locally on your device only. We do not have servers that collect or hold this information.

Services the app connects to

To deliver the features above, the app sends network requests to the following third-party services. By the nature of any internet request, these may receive your IP address, and — for location features — your coordinates or search terms. They process these requests to return the content you asked for; we do not share your data with them for advertising.

Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing how it handles requests.

What we do not do

Data retention

Because your data is stored on your own device, it remains there until you delete it within the app or uninstall the app. We do not keep a copy.

Children

Nūr is suitable for a general audience. The app does not require an account and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through any contact with us, please email us and we will address it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (including under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. Because the app holds no account and stores your data on your own device, you are largely in direct control: you can view and delete your data within the app, or remove it entirely by uninstalling. For any other request, contact hello@nurmuslimapp.com.

Legal bases for processing (UK/EU users)

Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on your consent (for example, location and notification permissions, which you grant and can withdraw at any time), and our legitimate interests in providing a functioning, privacy-respecting app.

International transfers

The third-party services listed above may process your requests on servers located outside your country. Those providers are responsible for safeguarding data they process in line with their own policies.

Security

We minimise the data the app handles by design and rely on your device’s built-in protections for data stored locally. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we aim to protect your information using reasonable measures.

Changes & contact

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date at the top. Questions about this policy or your privacy? Email hello@nurmuslimapp.com.
